fasp - The fasp protocol, versions 1 and 2
Aspera's fasp transfer technology is an innovative (patent-pending) software that eliminates the fundamental bottlenecks of conventional file transfer technologies, and dramatically speeds transfers over public and private IP networks.
Our current version of the protocol, fasp 2, has several major improvements over fasp 1:
- Bandwidth Discovery - fasp 2 automatically discovers the path MTU (pMTU) size, thus avoiding packet fragmentation. This improves performance, and allows transfers to work in situations where fragmented packets are forbidden.
- Optimization for small files - fasp 2 introduces a file streamlining technique which eliminates the performance bottleneck when transferring multiple small files. This is a huge improvement over fasp 1.
- Improved Adaptive Transfer Rate - The improved adaptive rate control of fasp 2 enables users to utilize all available bandwidth along the transfer path, while sharing the network capacity fairly with other traffic.
- Parallel Transfer - fasp 2 introduces parallel transfer for server clusters or multi-core machines, enabling full leverage of computing power.
- Aggregate Bandwidth Management (Beta) - fasp 2 includes the aggregate bandwidth management to cap the total transfer rate of all Aspera transfers below a pre-configured bandwidth. This provides for flexible and on-demand configuration of sharing policy within the bandwidth cap.
- Symbolic Link Support (Beta) - fasp 2 is capable of handling symbolic links.
