Cloud Computing
Overview
By enabling high-performance data transport to and from remote infrastructures, Aspera allows organizations to fully realize the scalability potential, efficiency gains and cost savings offered by cloud computing services. A critical technology barrier is the transfer of data to and from customer premises and cloud data centers, and between computing centers within geographically distant cloud facilities. At the root of the problem is the poor performance of TCP protocols such as FTP or HTTP for large data transfers over the wide area – a problem that Aspera’s fasp™ technology eliminates.
Working with leading providers including Amazon Web Services and IBM CoD, Aspera provides cloud-deployable software tools allowing users to transfer files at full bandwidth capacity – hundreds of times faster than conventional technologies – with the assurance that highly valuable content will be transported and stored in total security.
Benefits
-
For data-intensive application users, transfer tens to hundreds of Gigabytes per hour to the cloud, from any global location, over links of 100 Mbps and higher, to truly exploit the elastic computing and storage resources.
-
For cloud service providers, better monetize and utilize geographically disperse facilities, as data can transfer to and from customer sites and remote infrastructures at the same speed, regardless of distance.
-
For application providers, easy spin-up of Aspera server images allows fast and easy, virtually unlimited expansion of transfer capacity as needed.
Applications
-
High Performance Computing On Demand — IBM hosts six global Computing on Demand centers worldwide, with over 13,000 HPC compute cluster processors and terabytes of high-speed storage. IBM utilizes Aspera software to move data at 50x the speed of standard FTP between its facilities in Japan and New York, and partners with Aspera to provide its customers with high-speed transfer capabilities to and from its CoD facilities.
-
Content Aggregation, Transformation and Distribution — Companies such as EMI Music and mPoint are deploying Aspera Enterprise Server software in the cloud as a high-speed transfer core integrated in content aggregation, transformation, distribution, and service platforms.
-
Database Hosting — Life sciences research and other data intensive domains can utilize Aspera software to move data to and from massive databases hosted in the cloud. In many cases, Aspera software may make otherwise impossible transfer volumes practical.
