Community programming at maximum speedMSG Varsity uses Aspera technology to shorten turnaround times
MSG Varsity provides hyper-local coverage in the New York tri-state area of high school sports, academics and other related activities via its television, online and mobile channels. "The success of MSG Varsity depends on the active and timely participation of our content providers, so we want to make things as fast and reliable for them as possible," said Bill McGlone, Director of Technology Operations for MSG Varsity. Before Aspera, FTP transfers were slow and unreliable, in some cases timing out before uploads were complete. MSG Varsity had no way to track whether content was uploaded successfully, when, and by which school. In some cases, schools expected content to be broadcast when MSG Varsity had never even received it-- a problem when audiences were eager to watch a season-defining game or another timely event.
Today, Aspera Connect Server powers high-speed file uploads from participating high schools to MSG Varsity's Web portal. Aspera's high-speed fasp™ technology uses all of the available bandwidth, allowing schools to quickly and easily upload large video files at maximum-speed, regardless of file type and network conditions. "When we first launched MSG Varsity, it took us around 5-7 days to turn around content for broadcast. With Aspera, our turnaround time is 24-28 hours. That's a radical improvement," said McGlone.
